Looking for your refund? When you get it will depend on how you filed your return (e-file or paper) and how you asked to receive it (paper check or direct deposit).
A paper-filed return genenerally will get a refund check within six to eight weeks of filing, though it may be shorter or longer depending on when you filed it. For instance, if you filed it early, you are more likely to receive it quicker than if you filed on April 15th. If you chose direct deposit of your refund for a paper filed return, you should generally receive it within a week after the return is processed by the IRS, which again is affected by the IRS workload when filing it.
If you use e-file, the IRS posts a schedule of when a paper check is issued or direct deposits are posted to your account. The typical e-file schedule is that if the return is accepted by Thursday at noon, a direct deposit will be made by the following Friday. A paper check is typically generated two Fridays after acceptance.
You should also note that acceptance of an e-filed return is not instantaneous; upon e-filing, the IRS servers "drain" the e-files at various intervals which is determined by their server load during the filing season. Typically, this is within a few hours or overnight, but, for instance, if you file it at 11:59 am on Thursday, you very well may not see your refund until the next refund cycle.
State refund cycles vary by state. Typically, we generally see Georgia's refund schedule fluctuate widely depending on when you filed - meaning the earlier a return is filed during the filing season, the more likely you are to see it in your account quickly. Early in the filing season, you may see Georgia's refund schedule actually beat the IRS schedule. As the filing season progresses, it will typically take two to three weeks longer and sometimes many more to see your Georgia refund than the IRS.
